Happenings: Spirit of horses prances to life in paintings

By Valerie Christopher

Susan Easton-Burns grew up experiencing the fear, power and beauty of a horse. As a child she was enlightened by a black beauty, standing boldly before her with the fierce wind from a winter's storm blowing through its mane and tail. It was that moment (and many others since) that inspired her to paint, love, and see the world as a horse would. "I didn't choose to do horses, it was my subconscious," Burns said in a recent phone interview. "It just kind of turned out that way. I can capture the spirit of a horse on canvas the same way I can when I'm riding one."

Burns will showcase this spirit on Saturday at The Red Arrow Gallery in Joshua Tree in an open reception for her works titled, "Horse Paintings." Residing in Douglasville, Ga. for the past 25 years, with her husband and two children, her passion spun from horse Eventing, which consists of dressage one day, show jumping the next and ends with cross country riding. She and her daughter participate in these competitions throughout Southeastern U.S. Though, Burns, who considers herself an adult amateur rider, admits she doesn't paint because she rides horses. She paints, because horses are what she sees. "I don't paint horses because I want to sell horse paintings," she says. I paint them because they're in the environment in which I live. They're in my subconscious mind." Painting in latex and acrylic, Burns will present 40-plus paintings this weekend. "The paintings start out as something non-conscious that later becomes conscious," she says. " Through painting, I have the spirit that horses have."
